Domestic Helper/Nanny are person who work in private house holds and take over duties in housekeeping (cleaning, clothes washing, ironing, food shopping, coooking, etc.) and/or duties related to children.

Employment of Domestic Helper/Nanny

Domestic Helper/Nanny are regulated under the standart employment contract information for domestic helpers (NAV). There the legal minimum salaries and other regulations are defined, which need to be followed. Each canton then also have their own regulation, which are regulated in the canton standart employment contract information for domestic helpers. Please note, that the salary is based on educational background, experience, skills and market salary value, etc.

 

As a family living in Switzerland, you have the possiblity to hire Domestic Helper/Nannies that already live in Switzerland with a valid working permit or a person from abroad with an EU passport. Third countrie members can not be hired as a domestic helper/nanny, it is impossible to receive a permit. The only exceptions is for families that move to Switzerland and did have a domestic helper/nanny employed with them abroad. Generally you can hire a person live-in or live-out. The domestic helpers/nannies that are hired as live-in, usually come from abroad (EU) and move to Switzerland for the job. For the domestic helpers/nannies which already live and work in Switzerland, they only want to be hired as live-out, since they already have their own place.

Definition Au Pair

Au Pairs are young persons, that live with a host family to learn the language, gain experience and to deepen the basic education in relation to culture exchange. In return for board & lodging and pocket money/salary the Au Pair works with the host family in their house hold. The legal regulation are based on the directives of the SEM (Federal Office of Migration) and the canton regulations.

Following regluations are important:

  • Families that want to hire Au Pairs from third countries (Non-EU), are obligated to obtain the permit with e legal regstistered agency in Switzerland
  • Au Pair from third countries can be between 18 - 25 years old, Au Pairs from EU/EFTA can be between 18 - 30 years old
  • Au Pair from third countries can stay for max. 1 year, Au Pairs from EU/EFTA can stay max. 2 years
  • The Au Pair salary is based on the canton regulations and is in Switzerland between 500 - 800 CHF net monthly
  • The Au Pair and host family can not have the same nationality, mother tongue or be related
  • The host families should either speak German, French or Italien at home, depending on which canton they live
  • Au Pairs are allowed to work max. 30 hours per week, from which the host mother or father have to be around 50% at home (15 hours) as a support person
  • Au Pairs are to mainly help with child care and with light house hold work
  • The Au Pair either workes 5 days per week with 6 hours per day or 6 days per week with 5 hours per day
  • As a host family you need the register/pay/arrange for the legal social deductions (AHV/IV/EO/ALV), taxes, possible pension fund, accident insurance, hand out a monthly salary sheet, do the yearly declarations, etc.
  • Board and lodging are legally defined with 990 CHF monthly and are a wage component
  • As a host family you need to reimburse your Au Pair with the monthly food compensation, should your Au Pair not eat at home (off day) or be on holidays, the rates are based on the AHV

Au Pair permits

In Switzerland the Au Pair permits for third country members are limited with quotas, some cantons have therefore taken the desicion to not approve any permits for Au Pairs from third countries. Such desicion has been taken by canton Zurich, Vaud, Solothurn, etc. In these cantons you can only hire Au Pairs with EU passport.
